15 Laws of DJing: Your Guide to Building a Successful DJ Career

Introduction

DJing is more than mixing tracks—it’s an art, a business, and a way of life. Whether you’re just starting your journey or you’ve been in the game for years, staying relevant and professional requires commitment. This ebook provides 15 indispensable laws to help you thrive in the dynamic world of DJing. From mastering your craft to building a brand, these principles will guide you to success.

1. Get Paid Something

Your time and skill have value. Even when you’re just starting out, accepting compensation—be it gas money, drinks, or a modest fee—sets the tone for your career. As you grow, so should your rates. The goal isn’t just to make money but to establish that your work deserves respect.

Tips:

Negotiate your worth; never undervalue yourself.

Create a rate sheet for different types of events.

Offer discounts strategically, not habitually.

2. Practice Every Day

Like any art form, DJing requires consistent effort to maintain and improve. Daily practice ensures you stay sharp and adaptable, whether it’s perfecting transitions, beatmatching, or exploring new genres.

Suggestions for Practice:

Dedicate at least 30 minutes daily to mixing.

Experiment with different styles to broaden your repertoire.

Record your sets and critique them.

3. Know Your Equipment

Understanding your gear inside and out gives you confidence during performances. Whether you’re using a basic controller or high-end turntables, mastery over your tools ensures smooth, stress-free sets.

Pro Tips:

Read the user manual thoroughly.

Stay updated on firmware and software.

Practice troubleshooting common technical issues.

4. Build a Strong Network

In the DJ world, who you know often matters as much as what you know. A strong network can lead to gigs, collaborations, and valuable industry insights.

How to Network Effectively:

Attend industry events and introduce yourself.

Stay active on social media and engage with other DJs.

Support others by sharing their events or music.

5. Don’t Burn Bridges

Reputations travel fast in the music industry. Even if you encounter challenges with clients, venues, or fellow DJs, handle conflicts with professionalism.

Strategies for Graceful Exits:

Always thank venues and clients, even if things didn’t go as planned.

Offer solutions when conflicts arise instead of creating drama.

Avoid speaking negatively about others in the industry.

6. Organize Your Music

An organized music library is essential for seamless performances. Knowing where your tracks are—and having backups—is crucial.

Organization Hacks:

Create playlists for specific event types (e.g., weddings, clubs).

Tag your files with BPM, genre, and mood.

Use cloud storage to safeguard your collection.

7. Master Communication

Being a great DJ isn’t just about the music; it’s also about how you interact with clients, event organizers, and your audience. Clear and professional communication can make or break your opportunities.

Focus Areas:

Learn to read the room and adjust accordingly.

Set clear expectations with clients in contracts.

Be responsive to inquiries and feedback.

8. Dress for Success

Your appearance leaves a lasting impression. Dressing appropriately for each event showcases your professionalism and helps you fit into the atmosphere of the gig.

Style Tips:

Invest in neutral, versatile outfits.

Consider the vibe of the venue—dress up for formal events, keep it casual but clean for clubs.

Avoid overly flashy or distracting attire.

9. Keep Your Personal Life Private

While transparency is valued, oversharing can dilute your professional image. Keep the focus on your music and performance to maintain respect in your field.

Boundaries to Maintain:

Avoid discussing personal drama on social media.

Separate professional profiles from personal ones.

Keep your energy focused on the event, not external distractions.

10. Keep Going

The journey as a DJ has ups and downs, but persistence pays off. If gigs are slow, focus on improving your craft or creating content that showcases your talent.

Inspiration to Push Through:

Remember why you started.

Celebrate small wins—each gig is a step forward.

Find a supportive community to lean on.

11. Stay Legal

Respecting copyright laws and licenses not only protects your career but also builds trust with clients and venues.

Legal Tips:

Use legitimate music platforms for downloads.

Stay informed about performance rights organizations (e.g., ASCAP, BMI).

Ensure your DJ software and plugins are licensed.

12. Maintain Your Vehicle

Reliable transportation is non-negotiable when you’re hauling gear to gigs. A breakdown can cost you more than a repair—it can damage your reputation.

Maintenance Checklist:

Schedule regular oil changes and inspections.

Keep a roadside emergency kit handy.

Have a backup plan, like a rental service or friend, for emergencies.

13. Promote Yourself

Self-promotion is a cornerstone of modern DJing. Whether it’s through social media, mixtapes, or live streams, you need to market yourself consistently to attract new opportunities.

Promotion Ideas:

Post behind-the-scenes clips of your practice sessions.

Offer free downloadable mixes on your website.

Collaborate with local artists to reach new audiences.

14. Keep Your Gear Functional

Broken or malfunctioning equipment can ruin your performance and reputation. Regularly check your gear and invest in quality components.

Gear Maintenance Tips:

Clean your equipment after every gig.

Replace worn-out cables and connectors.

Have spare parts, like needles or faders, on hand.

15. Keep It Simple

A well-executed, simple set often leaves a stronger impression than an overly complex one. Focus on delivering a smooth, enjoyable experience for your audience.

Simplification Strategies:

Stick to transitions and effects you’ve mastered.

Avoid overloading your sets with gimmicks.

Trust the music to carry the energy.

Conclusion

Success in DJing comes from more than just talent. It’s about professionalism, persistence, and passion. By following these 15 laws, you’ll establish yourself as a reliable, respected, and creative force in the industry. DJing isn’t just a job—it’s a lifelong journey. Embrace the hustle, and let your music make the world move.

Chicken Raid For "Boneheads Wing Bar" West Warwick Rhode Island

Chicken Raid for Boneheads Wing Bar West Warwick Rhode Island.

11 w sauce

Here is the official chicken raid for Boneheads Wing Bar in West
Warwick Rhode Island. The Naked wing is what was tasted. A plain fried
chicken wing drum with no seasoning, this was the first part to the
raid. As we all know I don't rate the sauce I rate the chicken and
good chicken is the base to any wing raid. Second you will see that
without any seasoning the wing was fried to perfection no pink or
undone pieces, they were also fried hard without being burnt or dis
colored. With that portion of the raid boneheads gets a 9 because of
one thing, lack of salt but a naked wing is to be naked right! Third,
when you chicken heads try the sauce it hits you like a punch in the
mouth. A good punch tho. As you began to get the flavors on your
tongue boy is it good. After trying the honey siracha sauce and the go
to bleu cheese boy I see why they sent me to boneheads. Now the raid
is 11 with the sauce so now it's up to you to try it for yourself.
Does Boneheads have great wings? Yes. Are they great without the
sauce? Yes. Are they better with the sauce? Of course. But who is
gonna eat a wing without sauce? Me! The Chicken Raider. Until next
time, we are still looking for who has the best chicken even tho we
have found some great places already. Deuces! Do you have chicken?
